Well party season has arrived and there is no better season to get your glam on! Sequins, sparkles, glitter it's all going on in the shops and you can go as subtle or as dramatic as you dare!

So here's me last Saturday night as I headied out with hubby and friends for the evening - everything is quite typical of me... apart from my new sequin top - it's a subtle nod to acknowledge that it's time to step it up... for dare I say.... Christmas.

If you are on Instagram then over the next few weeks use the hashtag #getyoursparkeon when you are wearing your sequins and sparkle outfits, and I'll repost my favourites on my Instastories.

I shopped for this top as part of my recent shopping trip to Rushden Lakes, all the tops you see where in store at the time. And for once it was nice to have some help in the changing room!

The brief for this blog was it had to be top that you can easily wear with jeans or trousers just to add a little sparkle on a night out. Apart from one top below, all of them have sequins, sadly New Look didn't have any that we felt were nice enough to show on the blog, however the top we selected was a lovely colour and would add some sparkle to a night out.

I'm also particularly loving the purple sequins, I felt this was a lovely alternative to just gold or silver, and the purple one from River Island is still a potential on my hit list! You will probably also notice that the H&M and the NEXT look exactly the same (believe me I had to do a double take with the photos for this post) but they are not; I purchased the NEXT as it was a much better weight of garment, and the quality was unbelievable for the price of £20! Yes £20 - and it's an item that won't date, you can wear party season to party season.

I also spotted the silver River Island sequin top on the catwalk at Stylist Live last week, I think this looks much better tucked in, as you will see it was quite long in length - and I think it looks pretty cool with velvet trousers - a real glam vibe. Love it!

They say black, but it was multi-colour with a strong hint of purple. I think the shorter sleeve makes this more versatile with jackets to wear it with. Love this a lot, you could easily size down for a more fitted look.

This may be cheaper than the NEXT tee, but it's no where near as good in quality but fit was absolutely fine.

New Look

Sorry ladies, I couldn't find it on the website, so if you love it, you'll have to head in store. There is a knot tie at the front, making this a short top to wear, either for those of you who are happy to show off your midriff or you'll need a high-waist pair of jeans or trousers on.

And the one I bought....

My version is black/silver, they also do it in blue, blush and teal. I sized down one size and it's still a loose fit.

I think by now you can kind of guess I love to shop, and it upsets me to hear at times when people say they can't stand it, they prefer to shop online.

Shopping online, let's be honest, is not much fun - you've got to guess your size, you have to pay postage and if you want to skip that you have to buy more and then you hate yourself at the end of the month when the credit card bill lands. It's such an easy way to get carried away as you are not physically carrying bags and having that stop button in your head of "I think I've spent enough"

Okay I get the pros... you can do it in your pjs (I get that) you can do it very late at night (yes I've had my panic buys too!) - but for the love of a sociable life, you need to head out of the front door!

Shopping can be fun, you just need to prepare correctly, and have the attitude to be calm, relaxed and go with the flow. Any shopping trip with a 'must have' or 'last minute panic because I left it to the last minute' is never going to be a good shopping trip.

Lizzi Richardson

Here's hoping you'll give some thought to my shopping tips before you head out for your next trip. My wish for you is to have a fun, enjoyable, sociable day and of course success in only buying the items you actually need.

And one thing I would like you to promise me - is that if you get the items home and it's not right - you don't hide them at the back of the wardrobe, you return and get a refund within the timescales of T&C's of that retailer, normally 28 days, but check and especially check the sale items BEFORE you purchase.

Lizzi Richardson

We all have different friends for different aspects of our lives, and for a fun and enjoyable trip these are the qualities you are looking for in your shopping buddy. And maybe you have different friends for different types of shopping, for example if you have a friend who loves shoes or has previously worked in a shoe shop this would be good for shoe shopping - it's a little like The Apprentice, select wisely and use their skills!

For me a great shopping buddy is those that like to start with coffee and chat, who wear practical shoes as I shop all day. They are happy to be in changing room for a while, going back and forth and likewise for them too. Plus they must be happy to go back to stores we've already been to.

Lizzi Richardson

If you shop on your own for a specific need, then yes 2-3 hours is probably the time you need to allow. But going with a friend I highly recommend that you give yourselves plenty of time. So block the whole day, leave your phone in your handbag (there's always plenty of refreshment breaks to have a look!) and take you time to shop at leisure.

There are so many great shopping centres and cities that give you the opportunity to make a day of it, so use it as a way to get some'Me Time' that we all crave.

Some of my favourite places to shop are Westfield Shepherd's Bush, Westgate Oxford, Eden Centre in High Wycombe, CMK in Milton Keynes along with St Albans, Cheltenham and Nottingham cities and not forgetting good old London Town.

I've recently come across a new shopping 'centre' it's outdoors in Northamptonshire and it's called Rushden Lakes - and it's this location that I've chosen to create this post from.

Lizzi Richardson

Don't rush lunch... get Mediterranean with your style and enjoy your lunch at leisure. Most places offer consumers a variety of different cuisines and eateries within close location to each other. Take this time to reflect on what you've seen, what you want to head back for and what is still on your list to find.

If all the stores only offered black clothes that's all you will be able to buy. I highly recommend that you take the time to travel to bigger locations to get more choice. Ideally a location that has at least one department store.

I would always recommend to start in a department store as they have key brands of various price-points and you can quickly gauge who might have what you need or you get a feel for the cost you may need to spend. If they don't have exactly what you want, but you've worked out which stores may have, then head to them next.

Jigsaw at Rushden Lakes

Don't buy everything as soon as you see it. This is why you need time and I generally don't buy anything much before lunch. I want the opportunity to reflect, to go see more and to chat it through over lunch or coffee and then firmly decide what I am heading back for.

Most stores will hold an item for you for about 2 hours, I use this service a lot - it keeps you calm about no one else grabbing that one size that fitted you perfectly. And don't always assume you can get it online, I've missed out on some great items thinking I can do that. Stores are getting savvy - they have some items in store only and some items that are exclusive online.

Rushden Lakes

I do judge and form opinions about places, this will impact where I shop in the future. And so should you, this will form the basis of where you will (in time) love to shop. Your list may not be the same as mine, but I'm sure we have a few in common:

  • Easy and cheap parking - I frequently go to Westfield Shepherd's Bush because I am a Smart Parking customer and it's £8 all day and I don't have to faff with tickets either. I'm very keen on Park & Ride and I'm happy taking a bus ride into a city. I was pretty impressed with Rushden Lakes as it's FREE for up to 5 hours
  • Good toilet facilities - I hate public toilets and I will judge a shopping centre or city on this type of amenity. Ladies like them clean, modern and stylish with plenty of room and mirrors to get themselves sorted
  • A great selection of cafes and restaurants - when I take a break, I want it to be relaxing, I like to people watch (don't we all), I need free WIFI that works and I like choice of either sitting inside or outside
  • Areas that have seating where you are not in the walkway of a shopping centre or on the pavements in the cities  - we all need five minutes in the day to gather our thoughts and if you've just had a coffee break you might not be ready for another one.

Lizzi Richardson

With the big shopping season ahead for Christmas, I would like it to be as fun and enjoyable for you. If you've loved it by using my shopping tips, then you might just brave it again for the January sales!

Meet Sue, who's 53 in a couple of weeks, and she lives in Altrincham, Cheshire. Her hobby is being a fashion blogger for the Highstreetedited and she has a fabulous and inspirational Instagram account called @SUELOVESFASHIONOVER50.

I was really keen to feature Sue on STYLE MATTERS because fashion doesn't stop at 40, and Sue proves at 52 that fashion and style is just as important in her life today, as it was as a child playing dress up - something we both have in common, very much!

Sue and I hope you love the interview!

Enjoy reading,

Lizzi x

How do you describe your personal style?

I would say my current style is eclectic and fashion-led with a pinch of edginess.

Why does style matter to you?

Style is an important part of who I am – wearing stylish clothes makes me feel put together, more confident and most importantly happy.

Have you always been interested in style?

Yes, I have. I used to love dressing up as a child and putting outfits together – I remember my mum wasn’t always very impressed with my ideas! I loved (and still do love) shopping for clothes with friends, and would spend any spare pocket money on a new outfit.

What would be your signature style look?

This is a difficult one as I don’t really have a “signature look”.  I have recently started to try to shop my wardrobe more and buy new pieces with more consideration instead of continually impulse buying. I think through doing this a signature style will emerge! I do however like edgy pieces and enjoy pairing chunky boots with a skirt or dress or dressing head to toe in leopard print.

What’s your view on fashion vs. style?

I love both, but as mentioned above I think that buying too many fashion pieces can actually mask your own style.  Stand back, take a look at the pieces that you have before buying fashion pieces that will enhance what you already have. Also, keep hold of the pieces that you love – fashion is cyclical so in another 3 to 4 years you’ll discover that you already own the “must-have” piece of the season.

What is your body shape?

I would say my body shape is “rectangle” (I have just googled this by the way!) I am 5 foot 8, and slim – I recently slimmed down from a large size 10 to a size 6/8.  I am quite flat chested.  Since having children I am prone to weight gain around my tummy but I am trying to combat this by exercising regularly (4 to 5 times a week) and by clean eating (although chocolate is a temptation I find hard to resist).

Have you worked this out for yourself or did you get professional advice/training?

I worked this out for myself with the help of Google!

What is the best thing about being a rectangle?

Most pieces tend to fit, and I can confidently order pieces I love online, knowing that 9 times out of 10 they will fit well.

What’s not so easy about being a rectangle?

As most items tend to suit me it is difficult to decide which are keepers and which are not, and I end up keeping far too many!

What three styling tips do you have for a rectangle?

  1. As for most body types, wear a well-fitting bra to define the bust you have.
  2. Use belts on dresses and jackets to give shape.
  3. Be bold – try out different dress/skirt lengths, clash patterns, add different textures – and experiment with different types of footwear to also add interest.

What must you avoid (regardless of if it’s in fashion) for your rectangle figure?

  1. Avoid shapeless clothes – smocked tops and voluminous dresses.
  2. If you are keen to add curves, then avoid straight dresses.
  3. But my mantra is if you love it wear it, so feel free to ignore this advice!

What are your three favourite stores to shop (bricks or clicks!)?

Oh this is hard – there are so many that I love!  Most of my shopping is done online as I don’t find the time to visit actual High Street stores between work and family, but here goes..

Mango – they have some fabulous pieces at the moment – I have several in my virtual basket...

H&M – a quick fashion fix which doesn’t cost the earth, arrives quickly and is easy to return.

M&S – they are really upping their game.  Each season they include more fashion-led pieces at affordable prices. Always worth a look.

What do you own that you will never ever give away?

A Zara maxi dress in an autumnal print that I bought 3 years ago and wore for my 50th birthday celebration. I’m looking forward to wearing it again very soon!

I've not talked about Zara for a while and that's because I kind of went off the brand in the summer - I don't know entirely why but I just found each time I went in store I felt totally underwhelmed.

Now for AW18 I now feel the exact opposite, in fact this week I could have quite easily bought half a dozen items without giving it much thought - and as I left the store (empty-handed) well I want to make my purchases considered ones, I wondered what's changed?

I think it's all the print - I'm loving it and particularly the Chain Print, a design typically associated with Versace, Hermes and Gucci - and I can't help but notice just how enticing it is! I feel there is something for everyone; whether that's a particular colour way or if you don't want to go a full maxi dress then there are lots of blouses and scarves to get your hands on, and you can do it all under one store - Zara.

Lizzi Richardson

It started with this dress that I wore to Style St Albans, and I plan to wear it again this week to Stylist Live - these particular colours suit a dark Autumn like me with the gold, green and orange.

#twinnningiswinning - Did you see Perla Navia wearing it on this week's episode of Real Housewives of Cheshire? Proving this print and faux silk is ideal for holiday season too.

Photo taken on my iPhone whilst on telly - hence the poor quality!

I'm wearing XL for a size 14 fit (it comes up slightly big but I need that for the larger bustline, if you are smaller in the bust then drop a size).

And then later in the episode we spot her in this little number (I wish I have the legs for it, but sadly not!) - If YOU do then buy!!!! I love this mini dress.

Photo taken on my iPhone whilst on telly - hence the poor quality!

So let's break this down! Here are a collection of different garments you could consider from Zara should you wish to invest in this style and here are a few styling tips:

  • This print is ideal for special daytime occasions - I'm planning to wear mine on Christmas Day, glam but nice and roomy for a day at home with guests
  • Add statement jewellery - I have found with this print, you need to bling it up a little, try a thick bangle or perhaps big statement earrings. I wore my (very old) oversized red ring which you can see in the film at the bottom of this post
  • Colourful shoes - the one thing about this print you can go large on colour or keep it simple with black or white shoes - there is endless choice
  • You can own one more than garment - the print is so different and yet the same, if you love it then your wardrobe can accommodate more than one piece

I'm loving this midi dress and it will be on my radar on my next Zara shopping trip! I feel I could wear this more for everyday and I like the midi length, a slightly easier length during winter months with long boots. I'm wearing a size large here which fits well considering the other dress I needed XL.

Lizzi Richardson

Add this to all your basic tops for instant glam! Depending on your dress code for work, I personally would be tempted! Just add long boots.

Easy to adopt into your wardrobe this will pretty much go with trousers, jeans and skirts. Pick a neutral from the print and work it in with that, this should give you plenty of styling options. Add statement jewellery to elevate this look.

If you've got great legs, then print will really work for you and these skinnies are a great place to start! Ideal for Winter wardrobe and perfect for a night out or for daytime with a fabulous knit!

An item that is very hot this season, and I will be covering this off more later in the month. But sticking with chain print, how glam is this for night out worn simply with black trousers or skinny jeans. Love it!

Love the chain print but don't necessarily want to wear it on... or perhaps the print is a little to big for your petite size, then invest in a scarf.  There's quite a few in the Zara collection. You can wear them in your hair, around your neck or if you opt for one of the smaller ones you can tie it to your bag.

Now that 'Trick or Treat' season is over... I have a the perfect treat for YOU (unless you are really in the mood to treat someone else... but don't YOU deserve it?!) How do you fancy a little gift every day for twenty-five days with zero calories in sight?

A 2018 advent beauty box, that's how!

Today I treated myself to the M&S The Book of Beauty - I had to spend £35 to get this £280 box for £35! What a saving! So last week when I went shopping for Holly's MUST HAVES I did select the brown printed midi shirt dress, however M&S kindly reserved it for me at their Collections Department after I enquired about their 2018 beauty advent calendar because it wasn't due to launch until 1st November.

Today I headed back to Westfield Shephard's Bush not only get my dress, but to get this little beauty that I know I will enjoy during December. I think this has really put me in the mood for Christmas... and I should look, smell and feel amazing come 25th December when everyone descends upon my home for Christmas dinner and games (yep eight people and counting!).

M&S The Book Of Beauty

The good thing about selecting a 2018 Beauty Advent Calendar that comes from multiple brands, it gives you a chance to try something new.  However, if you are an uber fan on only one skincare or beauty range, then this is truly a fantastic time to purchase as you'll get the best value for money.

Here are five more to consider.... but one thing is for sure, every brand will only have produced a limited run, so if you want one, you need to purchase quickly as this kind of gift product has become extremely popular over the last few years - once it's gone, it will be gone!

John Lewis & Partners make THE BEST Christmas ads, and so I can only imagine this beauty box to be absolutely amazing! The price-point is a little premium compared to the one I bought, but this one contains a mix of full and trail size products and includes some extremely gorgeous brands of Lancôme, Elemis, Clarins none other than a favourite brand of mine Fresh.

Now this next one that you can purchase at Boots, is the Sleek MakeUp Can’t Wait Another Day Advent Calendar - and it's only £35. Sheerluxe beauty team rated it as one of the best value for money advent calendars, and a great way to refresh your makeup.

And whilst I'm talking Boots, if you want to recap on my Christmas Gifting with Boots post I wrote about early October, simply click here.

Exclusive to John Lewis & PartnersEstée Lauder are doing a holiday set for 12 days. This says to me that you are probably getting larger sizes or a considered selection of products rather than a kind of luck dip!

It features their newest innovation—Advanced Night Repair Eye Supercharged Complex plus a mix of skincare, makeup and fragrance favourites in deluxe travel sizes.

The luxury brand Rituals is offering The Ritual of Advent deluxe calendar, which is one of two that they have produced for 2018, and what I love about this, it's a mini Christmas tree! How fabulous is this, you can put it centre place in your home and it serves a dual purpose of Christmas decor along with gifting daily over 25 days!

This calendar offers you £140 worth of product for £89 (and if you order online this will be free delivery as it's over £20 - bonus!)

And I had to finish this post with one of my favourite London stores who has a heritage second to none! Liberty London. Their £195 Beauty Advent Calendar 2018 has product worth over £600! Now that's a treat!
